Alternative medicine in the United States is growing rapidly, according to a recent Fiscal Times article (July 14, 2014). To Shanghong Lu, MD, PhD, who combines alternative and conventional medicine, the growth in alternative medicine is empowering individuals to take a new approach to health, with more emphasis on the whole body, prevention rather than "quick fix" cures, and less reliance on medication and invasive procedures. Lu made her remarks on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water radio show of August 4, 2014.

Rapid Growth of Alternative Medicine

Shanhong Lu. MD, PhD, is Founder of Mount Shasta Integrative Medicine, a practice combining Western medicine with traditional Chinese healing arts that focuses on wellness, prevention and balance rather than symptoms. She spent her first 25 years in Beijing where her mother was a cardiologist and her grandmother was a traditional healer.

The globally syndicated Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® radio show, with host Sharon Kleyne, is heard on VoiceAmerica and Apple iTunes. Kleyne is Founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research, a research, technology and product development center and the only company in the world specializing in fresh water, atmosphere and health. Natures Tears® EyeMist®, a 100 percent fresh water mist that Dr. Lu took to China, is the Research Center's international signature product for dry eyes.

According to Fiscal Times, the highest rate of alternative medicine use is among the "Millennial Generation," who graduated high school after 2000. In homeopathic medicine, for example, use among millennials rose from 4 percent to 11 percent between 2009 and 2013. Alternative medicine is a $31 billion annual business in the US. The National Institutes of Health established the National Center for Comprehensive and Alternative Medicine in 1998. Their preferred term for alternative medicine is "CAM."

When people experiences unexplained muscle aches, for example, says Lu, most take a couple Tylenol and if the pain persists, they go to a doctor who prescribes a muscle relaxant. If they knew their body well enough, they would realize that muscle soreness may be a symptom of dehydration and start their self- treatment by simply drinking more water. Drinking additional water each day could also alleviate other symptoms they hadn't noticed and head off any number of serious diseases.

Other symptoms that could respond to drinking more water, according to Sharon Kleyne, include stress, headaches, fatigue, sore and irritated eyes, fever, dry mouth, coughing and nasal congestion

Lu describes the CAM approach to medicine and health as "finding the doctor within." Most serious diseases, according to Lu, can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle, education, emphasis on wellness rather than disease, and close monitoring of one's own body.

As an MD, Dr. Lu admires conventional medicine. If a person gets hit by a car, modern hospitals can work miracles. But many of the disease that they miraculously cure could have been prevented, says LU, and formulated medications tend to have side effects, especially when taken long term. Pills also tend to mask symptoms, making diagnosis more difficult.

Dehydration, according to Kleyne, is an extremely common side effect of medication.

Disease is not bad luck and health is not an accident, concludes Lu, who teaches patients that they have far more control over their own health than they realize. There are 50 trillion cells in the human body, Lu explains, each of which is a separate living organism consisting mostly of water and requires constant nurturing. The ability of cells to acquire and maintain water, according to Dr. Lu, depends on the availability of silicon, potassium and magnesium. So the place to start in controlling one's body environment is to drinking sufficient water and keeping cells supplied with these three minerals.

Kleyne recommends eight glasses of pure water a day, in addition to all other fluid intake, starting with two glasses upon rising. Lu recommends ½ ounce per day for every pound of body weight, so a person who weighs 200 pounds would need to drink 100 ounces.
